01 - Keepers of the living wilds

Lightsworn

Mengaro

A primal and deeply mysterious people, the Mengaro call Aranthia’s dense jungles home. Having lived in harmony with nature for millennia, their knowledge of natural healing and medicine remains unrivalled. To survive the harsh and unforgiving environment of ancient Velenthir, they created combat techniques that send them into a trance-like state, allowing them to defeat opponents with unmatched agility and precision. The Mengaro seek neither expansion nor domination, but perfection and harmony. Their ancient temple cities are architectural masterpieces that shelter immense stores of knowledge accessible only to their own kind. Organized into tribes, they are led by the Kel’Ra, a bloodline of wise shamans and druids. As guardians of justice and preservers of nature, they chose the path of the Lightsworn to fight the dark corruption surrounding Aranthia.

02 - Heirs to a hard-won freedom

Lightsworn

Humans

A young people who freed themselves from the chains of slavery to take their destiny into their own hands, humans escaped the dark shadow of their past and proved themselves valuable allies to the species of Velenthir. Building on that rise, they established their mighty kingdom in Valturion, in the east of the Velenthir continent. Branded by limited affinity for magic, they were never able to fully escape the suspicion of other peoples. They compensated for that weakness with physical strength and cunning, producing some of Aranthia’s most resilient warriors and assassins. Their destiny is to defend their new homeland and strive for recognition, power, and honour; the humans of Valturion therefore joined the Lightsworn in the fight against the encroaching darkness.

03 - Forged in the northern depths

Dwarves

Technically gifted yet deeply devout and disciplined, the dwarves share mankind’s fate and trace their origins to a dark chapter of slavery. Their birth was heralded by the mining of rare crystals imbued with extraordinary power in the far north of Dwenareth. Human slaves transformed after long contact with the mysterious crystals, fleeing into the mountains as deformed and deranged creatures; over centuries, they evolved into the dwarves of Aranthia. They do not reveal their true origin story, yet somewhere in the depths there must have been a connection to the Light—one that endowed them with intellect, strength, immense endurance, and freedom from the shadows of their past. Dwarves are excellent inventors, steadfast warriors, master smiths, and practitioners of light magic. Though once undecided about the new age, they ultimately chose an alliance with the Lightsworn.

04 - The gods’ unbroken stone

Lightsworn

Valkar

Shaped by the gods from Aranthia’s primordial rock and forged by fate, the Valkar began in a long war between light-forged and shadow-touched kin. That conflict sought to cement the dominion of two kinds of gods in the still-young world. These once-powerful beings were corrupted by divine power and eventually overwhelmed, falling into oblivion. After a slumber lasting several hundred thousand years, their lives were inadvertently renewed by demonic greed. Weakened but resolute, the Valkar entered a world new to them and swore allegiance to the Light. Strength, courage, and unity are the virtues they pursue and defend. Because of their past, they seek to turn their shadow-touched kin away from destruction and death, while recognising that such things can be unavoidable in the struggle for preservation and stability.

05 - Reborn in the divine light

Lightsworn

Light Elves

Descendants of Aranthia’s first elves, born of pure light, the Ilethians were reborn in the light of the gods after the demons’ betrayal of the elven race. The Soul Shattering and the unintended reawakening of the Valkar forced them to abandon their former homeland of Velenthir. Driven by fate and blessed with extraordinary intellect and an affinity for magic, they first gained a foothold on Erathion, establishing the northern kingdom of Valanor to prepare for their destiny and reclaim Velenthir. After their campaign succeeded, the Ilethians were once again regarded as the dominant and powerful people at the heart of Velenthir. When the Shadowfall descended and worldly conflict escalated, it was they who, together with the Kel’Ra, heralded the birth of the Lightsworn.

06 - The blood covenant freeborn

Shadow Pact

Telrakhi

Shy yet powerful beings, born of the dark blood of their demonic masters and the essence of betrayal, the Telrakhi were destined to be warlike slaves. They ultimately and unexpectedly gained their free will, and were left to fend for themselves. Their appearance varies greatly: horns, facial features, ears, and eyes take on a wide variety of colours and shapes, while their dark scars emit a black, terrifying mist that further underscores their demonic origins. They secretly established a civilization within the cave systems beneath Aranthia’s majestic mountain ranges. Their sophistication, intelligence, and ferocity gave rise to great warriors, mages, and assassins. Beginning as small tribes, Telrakhi society grew into the Blood Covenants—vast tribal structures that now administer entire metropolises beneath the peaks and field immense military forces. Though they became increasingly neutral after reaching the surface, their origins and ferocity led many covenants to take up arms beneath the banner of the Shadow Pact.

07 - The voices beneath the waves

Shadow Pact

Xarandur

Extraordinary creatures whose origins lie in the dark depths of the seas, the Xarandur are among Aranthia’s oldest humanoid species. They breathe both water and air, sustain themselves by consuming magical essence and life force, and communicate through telepathy. Their voices can even penetrate the minds of outsiders. Ancient culture, wisdom, and a natural affinity for the magical arts make the Xarandur among the most powerful and talented spellcasters in all of Aranthia. Once nomadic tribes, they were driven into the upper waters and eventually to the surface after a bitter battle against Shyurgurrak, the Lord of the Depths. There they established vast kingdoms over the seas. Having defended justice and unity in earlier eras, an ever-growing thirst for power took root within the royal houses. During the Age of the Shadow Wars, some of those great houses joined the Shadow Pact.

Orcs

Descendants of a repulsive brood created through experiments on living beings, the Orcs are also known as Orx—named for their creator, Orxhala, an outcast witch and former princess of the Xarandur Aranthi tribe. Thousands of years ago, these monstrosities were used as instruments of vengeance in an invasion of the Aranthi lands. Their original homeland was Shadowburn Isle in the Southern Sea. Over millennia, however, they evolved into a distinct people, settling the lands of Yilthir after they had degenerated into desert and wasteland. Following the downfall of their mistress, the Orcs were forced to forge their own destiny. Their wild and uncontrollable nature, thirst for war and conquest, immense strength, and growing intellect made them fearsome warriors and talented necromancers. Marked by mistrust and hatred, they rarely ally with other peoples; the Age of Shadowfall ultimately led them to swear allegiance to the Shadow Pact.

09 - Blades of the Soul Shattering

Shadow Pact

Dark Elves

The embodiment of the dark side of the betrayal of Aranthia’s firstborn elves, the dark elves are marked by deep red scars and fiery, glowing eyes. They shared the Light Elves’ fate and left Velenthir after the Soul Shattering, seeking a new home in Erathion. There they settled far south in the barren plains and mountain ranges of Moonfall Valley, built imposing cities and settlements, and adopted the name Selethien. Cunning and driven by immense willpower, they perfected dark arts such as blood magic and combined them with centuries-old swordsmanship and other combat techniques. The dark elves are considered the creators of the battle-mage disciplines; few beings in all Aranthia master magic and blade to such a degree. Alongside the Xarandur, they are regarded as a driving force behind the founding of the Shadow Pact.

10 - Scions of the Dragon Dominion

Shadow Pact

Drakari

Created by the Dragon Gods to seize power over worldly affairs and emerge as the dominant people, the Drakari and the Elder Dragons were nevertheless unable to maintain their rule. With the Age of the Dragon Dominion, Aranthia’s last dark age came to an end. Weakened and ostracised for their deeds, the Drakari initially retreated to the far north of Dwenareth. Across the centuries of the Age of Enlightenment, however, they became increasingly accepted and mingled with other peoples. Known as exceptionally talented melee fighters, elemental mages, and armour smiths, they now attempt, under the banner of the Shadow Pact, to reignite the flames of conquest and dominance.
